Right Shot
Push Shot
Club path is right of the target
Club face is right of the the club path
Addressing the Push:
A push typically results from an "in-to-out" swing path. Here’s how you might correct it:
Alignment: Ensure your feet, hips, and shoulders are aligned parallel to the target line.
Ball Position: Check that the ball is not too far forward or back in your stance.
Swing Path: Practice swinging along the target line, avoiding an exaggerated inside path on the downswing.
2. Addressing the Slice:
A slice is often caused by an open clubface at impact. Here’s how to address it:
Grip: Adopt a stronger grip to help square the clubface at impact. Ensure that when you look down, you can see at least two knuckles of your left hand (for right-handed golfers).
Wrist Hinge: Ensure that your wrists are properly hinging during the backswing and releasing through impact.
Clubface Control: Practice drills that encourage you to square the clubface, such as consciously rolling the wrists through impact.
3. Drills to Correct Push Slice:
a. Towel Drill:
Purpose: To correct the in-to-out swing path.
How: Place a towel under your left armpit (for right-handed golfers) and ensure it stays there throughout the swing. This encourages a more connected swing and prevents the arms from getting too far inside on the downswing.
b. Alignment Rod Drill:
Purpose: To ensure proper alignment.
How: Place an alignment rod on the ground, parallel to the target line, and another perpendicular to the first, pointing at the target. Ensure your body lines are parallel to the first rod during setup.
c. Headcover Drill:
Purpose: To promote a square clubface through impact.
How: Place a headcover just outside the ball and practice hitting shots without striking the headcover. This encourages a more neutral path and helps to square the clubface.
d. Glove Drill:
Purpose: To encourage proper wrist hinge and release.
How: Place a glove under your left armpit and keep it there throughout the swing. This helps to ensure that the arms and body are working together and promotes a proper release of the wrists.
4. Additional Tips:
Slow Down: Sometimes, simply slowing down your swing can help to improve your path and clubface control.
Use Video: Record your swing to identify specific issues with your path and clubface orientation.
Take Lessons: Consider taking a lesson from a PGA professional who can provide personalized advice and drills.
5. Mental Aspect:
Stay Relaxed: Ensure that your arms and wrists are relaxed to facilitate a smooth swing and proper release.
Visualize: Picture the correct ball flight and swing path before executing the shot.
Remember, making changes to your golf swing can feel unnatural at first and may require consistent practice to see improvement. Always start by making small adjustments and gradually work your way to more significant changes if needed.
